Personal computer (PC) shipments in India fell 19 percent on year in the first quarter of the calendar year as the economic downturn strained the market, IT research firm IDC said on Wednesday. In the first quarter ended March, the number of client PCs sold fell to 1.67 million units from 2.07 million last year. Desktop PC sales fell 18 percent to 1.21 million units, while notebook PCs fell 21 percent to 466,000 units, IDC said in a statement. "Though the year-on-year growth rate of client PC shipments dropped 19 percent, this was an improvement over the previous quarter, indicating market has perhaps already bottomed out," said Sumanta Mukherjee, lead analyst, computing products research, IDC India in the note. Shipments for the quarter were up 7 percent from 1.56 million units in December quarter, aided by demand from government, education and banking sectors, IDC said Some of the government sector's spending was expected to resurface with the formation of the newly elected Congress-led coalition at the centre. "With a number of significant government-funded education and e-governance projects lined up in the coming quarters, a lot will hinge on how quickly the new government settles down to business," IDC said in the note. The total installed PC base in India crossed 36 million units, translating into one computer for every 30 Indians, the research firm added. |
