Aircel and Huawei recently tested the GSM/ UMTS/ LTE-TDD trial via Aircel’s existing network in India, successfully. The test was conducted using devices running Qualcomm Incorporated’s MDM9600 multi-mode chipset. The main focus of the experiment was execution of the Inter-RAT (Inter-Radio Access Technology) over multiple ranges of GSM/ UMTS/ LTE technologies.

Besides this, a few other high speed data services like VoD (Video-on-Demand), high definition video surveillance and streaming video off sites like YouTube were tested. All these matched the key performance indicators required from an LTE-TDD system. Huawei’s SingleRAN, SingleCore and multi-mode devices are capable of providing these services. The Huawei E392, which is an LTE-TDD/FDD/UMTS/GSM/CDMA multi-mode USB dongle completed the trial operation successfully.
It seems that Huawei plans to deploy the LTE-TDD network for GSM/UMTS for its subscribers soon enough to gain mileage on the other mobile operators currently plying in the mobile broadband market in India. The cost structure, however, will add a crucial dimension to its success or failure amongst users. |
