Wikipedia Denies Blocking Qatar

| by Priyanka Pradhan | Services

Web encyclopedia, Wikipedia was recently reported to have banned Qatar from posting entries on the open source website, but it turns out that the reports were greatly exaggerated. Founder, Jimmy Wales has now clarified that a certain IP number in Qatar was temporarily blocked for less than 12 hours, but reports of having blocked the entire nation were untrue.

A post by Jimmy Wales on Wikipedia states, "In all language Wikipedias, such an action would require a series of administrative processes, and would never ever be undertaken lightly, nor without extensive attempts at direct negotiation with the ISP and/or nation in question."

He explained that the particular IP address, has been temporarily blocked, because of a few disruptive editors from Qatar, but Wikipedia does not want to block other users with good intentions. However, the blocked IP address is one of Qtel's proxy servers, which is the only ISP in Qatar.

Due to this, other anon-users of Qatar will now have to register, to make posts on the site. He said they might introduce the registered- user system for everyone, to curb vandalism in future.
