Wikipedia, which will turn 10 this saturday, is now looking at new horizons to expand into. Wikipedia is now the world’s fifth favourite site and has over 440 million unique viewers. Information you want...in your language This year Wikipedia will be opening its first overseas office in India, where it hopes to capitalize on the large number of internet users, both via a computer and through cellphones. In an interview given to Reuters, Executive Director Sue Gardner says, "Our main strategic focus right now is on India and other countries in the developing world. Massive numbers of people are starting to get connected to the Internet, mostly through mobile phones but also through traditional PCs.” Wikipedia hopes that this move will allow them to expand their knowledge database in Hindi as well as several other languages in an effort to the reach scores of people, who want the information from Wikipedia, but in their preferred language. |
