31 Jan, 2007, 11:00 am IST | Aalaap Ghag | Smartphones

The next version of Windows Mobile, version 6.0 codenamed Crossbow, has now been officially named Windows Mobile 6 and the editions have been named in a different way.

The first one is Windows Mobile 6 Standard, which is the Smartphone edition for phones without a touch screen (like the i-mate SPL). The next one is the touch-screen capable Pocket PC Phone edition, which gets the new name: Windows Mobile 6 Professional, for phones like the O2 Atom. The older Pocket PC edition for non-phone PDAs like the Dell Axim has been named Windows Mobile 6 Classic.

Windows Mobile 6 is expected to be out in the first quarter of 2007, with its follow-up, codenamed Photon, coming in at the end of the year or early next year.
