Moto Q vs. Blackberry: Patent War

19 Feb, 2008, 11:06 am IST | tech2 News Staff | Smartphones

Nope, this isn't about a gadget shootout but a legal battle between Motorola and Blackberry-maker Research in Motion specifically over technology used in smartphones.

According to Bloomberg , "The Motorola suit targets the 8100, 8130, 8320, 8800, 8820 and 8830 models (basically Pearl, Curve and World models), as well as BlackBerry Exchange Server software." ".... The technology Motorola is suing over includes a method of storing contact information in wireless e-mails and a way of recognizing incoming phone numbers, court papers show."

The fact that Motorola is suing over phone software seems a tad confusing. The company's recent smartphones have run either on Linux (MotoMing etc.) or Windows (Moto Q series) and not proprietary Motorola software.

Anyway, RIM has obviously decided not going to give in without a fight. The company has counter-sued Motorola.

"Research In Motion's lawsuit claims Motorola infringed its patents, including one for a device "with a keyboard optimized for use with the thumbs," according to court papers provided by the company." Read More.

"Keyboard optimized for use with thumbs" ?? Well - doesn't that technically cover all QWERTY keyboard phones in the world? This is why lawyers need to be kept far, far away from technology lest we land up with more incredulous patent rulings.
