Motorola Droid CDMA Announced, GSM Rumors Abound

Motorola’s much Awaited DROID handset that’s going to be running on an Android 2.0 platform and launching with Verizon CDMA has been announced and will ‘arrive’ on November 06. The DROID is the first smartphone powered by Android 2.0 clair. For more insight into the 2.0 features click here.


“We’re proud to work with Verizon Wireless and Google on the first smartphone to feature Android 2.0,” said Sanjay Jha, co-chief executive officer of Motorola and chief executive officer of Motorola Mobile Devices. “DROID by Motorola delivers a rich consumer experience with warp-speed Web browsing, a mammoth screen, and Motorola’s expertise in design and voice quality. Combined with Android’s open, flexible graphical user interface and the power of Verizon Wireless’ 3G network, DROID is a smartphone that simply doesn’t compromise.”


DROID by Motorola is also one of the thinnest full-QWERTY slider phones on the market. The features –
  • A 3.7-inch touchscreen display that features a 480 x 854 pixel resolution that also features multi-touch capabilities
  • Full slide out QWERTY keypad with a five way-nav-pad
  • 3G (HSDP), EDGE/GPRS
  • Wi-Fi, Bluetooth with A2DP, USB 2.0 (micro)
  • GPS with A-GPS support for Google Maps Navigation
  • 5MP AF camera with dual LED flash and geotagging
  • 3.5mm handsfree socket
  • 16GB internal memory with microSD card support for external
The DROID’s toughest competitor might just be Nokia’s N900 so far. Although the first handset is launching exclusively with Verizon as a CDMA device, reports are out that a GSM version is definitely on its way. In fact a few leaked images showcase the device in the wild.
