Motorola Launches Rugged EDA - MC35

29 Mar, 2007, 1:16 pm IST | by Shayne Rana | Smartphones

Motorola’s new handheld computer the MC35 is a smartphone targeted at on-the-go field workers. Considering that it's also a bit bulky it's not being marketed as a PDA but rather as an Enterprise Digital Assistant or EDA.

Motorola maintains that it's an "all-in-one communication device that harnesses the voice and data applications people expect from an office setting and delivers them in the form of a durable and compact handheld mobile computer."

This new EDA is actually an affordable model from the former Symbol, the maker of industrial handhelds that was absorbed by Motorola earlier this year. Motorola also says they'll support it for at least five years, with customers able to buy service contracts in three-year blocks.

The MC35 supports GPS, WiFi, Bluetooth, and GSM/EDGE. It also has "laptop functionality", a 2 megapixel camera, bar code reader, mission-critical business applications, an Intel XScale PXA270 416MHz processor, Windows Mobile 5.0, push e-mail among other things. The device can also be managed from remote locations using other Symbol handheld devices.

It has a rugged functionality in the very traditional sense of the term and has passed several 'drop and tumble' tests. "You break it, we'll fix it," said Sheldon Safir, director of product marketing for Motorola's Enterprise Mobile Computing (EMC) group.

Depending on the configuration, the Motorola MC35 EDA will cost approximately between Rs. 28,160 ($640) and Rs. 33,000 ($750) and should start shipping in April, both unlocked through traditional Symbol sales channels and branded through Cingular.
