Android has been going strong and Apple’s OS is definitely feeling the pinch. Gartner has predicted that the current success of the Android OS is only get better and the platform will dominate close to half the smartphone OS market by the year 2012. Gartner has also predicted that Nokia will also excel once the Windows Phone devices start hitting the market. The performance won’t exceed the success of the Symbian platform phones but it’ll still be pretty impressive. Microsoft should take grasp of 19.5 per cent of the market share by 2015. Android should lead the space, while Microsoft-Nokia will make their presence felt
Apple will gain a small share in the next year or two, but will lose it to the other players. It should do pretty well this year. RIM’s share will also gradually shrink down to 11.1 per cent. Gartner predicts this keeping in mind that RIM will transition from the BlackBerry OS to QNX next year. Gartner expects average prices of all phones using open operating systems to be around $300 (Rs. 13,500). Open OS phones will make up for 47 per cent of the market. |
