Earlier today, we told you about Google announcing the next version of the Android OS, Ice Cream Sandwich. The new operating system is designed to bring in some of the features from Honeycomb, which was specifically designed for tablets, to mobile phones. This includes the Holographic UI, which is sure to demand quite some processing power from the phones which will get upgraded to Ice Cream Sandwich.

Which is why a lot of the Android Q&A Session attendees at I/O 2011 fine-tuned their ears and listened very carefully when Andy Rubin was asked a question regarding the aforementioned possibility. Rubin replied saying Google were working on making sure older phones would be able to experience the new updates.

He also revealed another interesting piece of information – that Google were definitely considering the possibility of releasing a new smartphone in their Nexus range, which would more than satisfy any demands Ice Cream Sandwich would make of the hardware. Dual-core? Quad-core? Nothing’s for sure yet, but we sure want to know, and soon.
