Bloomberg is reporting that Apple might be working on a cheaper version of their popular iPhone. Apple has been feeling the pinch from cheaper Android handsets in a segment where it has no presence whatsoever. If the reports are true and if Apple does go ahead with a smaller iPhone, it’s likely to be smaller and of course cheaper than current models. The source has stated that the prototype of the phone was a third smaller in size and had no Home button on it. A cheaper iPhone is likely to play havoc in the lower-end smartphone market Apple hasn’t confirmed any of the rumours but expect to take the first glance no earlier than June or July this year. The cheaper phones are targeted towards the Indian and Chinese markets where contract-free devices are sold predominantly. Apple is also said to be working on a dual-mode version of the iPhone which would work on both GSM and CDMA networks. Google’s Android share grew close to twice as much as Apple’s in the last quarter. If the rumours are true, Apple could quite possibly bring the fight back to Google. We’ll just have to wait and see. |
