At a mere 6.2 mm ZTE's Athena could be the world's thinnest phone

A couple of days back, we covered a story about Oppo’s new smartphone, called the Finder that had grabbed the title of being the world’s thinnest smartphone in the current crop of Android smartphones available in the market. While doing so, it also beat Huawei’s Ascend P1 S by a mere 0.03mm, but ZTE may just have beaten Oppo in this race with their soon to be announced smartphone, Athena, that is all of 6.2mm thick. Engadget has reported that one of the reasons why the device may be so slim is, ‘thanks to a keen terminal device strategy director from the company. While Mr. Lu hasn't delved into specifics, what we know so far is that Athena will feature a 720p display, Cortex-A15 chip (a source of ours said it will be multi-core) and up to 64GB of internal storage, as well as a Miflavor UI.’ That’s their custom ROM that runs over Android 4.0 ICS. Now, that is definitely a crazy spec sheet for a phone so thin. Too good to be true? Then we might just add this one tiny bit of information. The phone that is in the image below, the rumoured Athena, also comes with a black Kevlar edition, the same coating that the Motorola RAZR had. The Athena was first spotted on Weibo.com. ![]() Kevlar Body!
Finder had featured in a rather cool advert that compared it to the likes of the iPhone, which is 9.30mm ‘thick’, the Galaxy S II, which is 8.45mm thick and the RAZR, which is 7.10mm thick. The Finder, however, as compared to them measured a mere 6.5mm. If thickness (or for that matter, thinness) is something that is extremely important to you, then we’ll throw in a few more numbers. From the current generation of quad-core phones, the HTC One X is 8.9mm thick, while Samsung’s latest flagship, the Galaxy S III measures in at 8.6mm. Coming back to the slim profile of ZTE’s Athena, heating issues and battery life may be two major concerns, but leaving those bits aside, it is definitely an impressive feat to cram these specs into a profile so thin. |

We’ve already established that the Lumia 720 is Nokia’s best effort as far as Windows Phone 8 handsets go. This could soon change once the Lumia 925 hits markets, but as it stands now, the Lumia 720 offers the best blend of features and performance, wrapped in a beautiful package that’s quite affordable.
