CES 2013: Huawei Ascend D2, Ascend Mate and LG Optimus G2 to be shown off

| by tech2 News Staff | Smartphones

China-based Huawei will introduce its Ascend D2 smartphone at this year's Consumer Electronics Show (CES), according to a report by DigiTimes. The Ascend D2 was announced in October and comes with HiSilicon's quad-core processor and a 13MP rear camera. Along with the Ascend D2, Huawei will also show off the Ascend Mate, which has a 6.1-inch display, and features a 1.8GHz quad-core HiSilicon K3V3 processor.

Not to be left behind, LG too will be showcasing the LG Optimus G2 at the event. The smartphone is rumoured to have a 5.5-inch display with a 1080p resolution.

Huawei didn't reveal much about the Ascend D2 when it was first announced, but a leaked GLBenchmark report gives us a fair idea of what to expect. The benchmark revealed that the handset will run on Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean out of the box and that it would feature a 1.5GHz quad-core processor and a 5-inch screen with a resolution 1800 x1080 pixels with navigation buttons. The actual resolution of the device is 1920 x 1080 pixels. The handset features a 3,000mAh battery.

A lot has been already spoken about the Ascend Mate, which grabbed headlines owing to its 6.1-inch display. Recently, Huawei’s Chairman of devices, Richard Yu, popped into a Huawei store in Guangzhou, China recently and showed off the Ascend Mate. Wu stated that this handset features a LTPS type display, which may mean that it has a low temperature polysilicon. It has also been known that the handset will include a 4000mAh battery, 2GB RAM and will be 9.9mm thick. It is rumoured that the Huawei Ascend Mate features a 1.8GHz quad-core HiSilicon K3V3 processor.

The latest rumour about LG’s upcoming flagship, the Optimus G2, was that it would have a 5.5-inch display and not a 5-inch screen as was previously thought. This bit of information came via a report from Korean website Asian Economics, which went on to claim that the Optimus G2 will also have a 1080p display with a pixel density of 440ppi. The Korean website also states that the LG Optimus G2 will hit shelves in the first half of 2013. If launched in this time frame, it would come as good competition to the Samsung Galaxy S IV, which is expected to be launched around the same time.

We’ve already established that the Lumia 720 is Nokia’s best effort as far as Windows Phone 8 handsets go. This could soon change once the Lumia 925 hits markets, but as it stands now, the Lumia 720 offers the best blend of features and performance, wrapped in a beautiful package that’s quite affordable.
