CES 2013: Lenovo debuts 5.5-inch phone with Intel inside

Lenovo has announced a new smartphone—the IdeaPhone K900. It is one of the first phones that will be powered by Intel's new 2GHz dual-core Atom processor. On the display side of things, it sports a 5.5-inch screen with a resolution of 1080p and a pixel density of more than 400ppi.

The phone seems to be pretty slim, measuring at 6.9 mm. Lenovo claims that it is the thinnest phone in its class. It sports a stainless steel and polycarbonate body. The camera on the phone seems to be similar to the recently announced Xperia Z by Sony, which is a 13 megapixel camera with a Sony Exmor backside illuminated sensor.

It looks like users will be able to customise the phone through interchangeable back panels. While the device on display runs on Android 4.1, Lenovo has stated that on launch, the phone will be running on Android 4.2. The company also offers the unorthodox option to turn off Lenovo's UI skin, if you prefer a stock Android experience.

Intel had announced its Atom chip earlier this week. The processor, codenamed Lexington, is supposed to reach speeds of up to 1.2GHz with Hyper Threading technology.

The platform also includes the Intel XMM 6265 HSPA+ modem that offers dual SIM/dual standby capability for cost-conscious consumers. Lexington also supports up to two cameras, delivering advanced imaging capabilities, including burst mode that allows people to capture seven pictures in less than a second in 5-megapixel quality.

More features of the Intel Atom Z2420 include support for FM radio, microSD card slot and Intel's own Wireless Display technology. Acer, Lava and Safaricom have already lined up to incorporate the Atom Z2420 in their new products. Dates of release and pricing information will be announced later by the manufacturers themselves.

Another processor named Intel Atom Z2580 was also announced. Formerly called Clover Trail+, the Z2580 is targeted at performance and mainstream smartphones. The platform includes a dual core Atom processor with Intel Hyper-Threading Technology and also features a dual-core graphics engine. He said the new platform will deliver up to two times the performance benefits over Intel's current-generation solution (Intel Atom processor Z2460 platform), while also offering competitive power and battery life.
