Competition Commission of India Sues Apple

21 Jun, 2011, 2:57 pm IST | by Anuradha Shetty | Smartphones

The Competition Commission of India, or CCI, a seven-member body that has been formed to keep anti-competitive acts at bay has found a defaulter in Apple, the manufacturer of the iPad and the iPhone. Apple’s sales practices are being questioned by the committee, and Apple has been reprimanded for practicing unfair competition in the Indian market. According to the report prepared by the committee, Apple's movements in a market, as competitive as India are seemingly unfair, in the sense that, its products are being made available only through a few, handpicked service providers, in addition to their own signature stores.

Sued..

Being Unfair!

The latest version of Apple’s hugely popular smartphone, iPhone has been made available in the Indian market. However, the iPhone can be ordered only through Bharti Airtel and Aircel, two popular mobile service providers in the country, whereas the iPad can apparently be picked up only from Apple’s signature stores. The CCI feels that such stinginess on Apple’s part is surely doing no good to its own image in India, as also is drastically slicing off the purchase options of the Indian buyer. In addition to these, they filed a complaint that the software downloads for Apple can be done only on the iStore, as the devices don’t support any other software downloads, thereby limiting the consumer’s choice further.

Apple now has been booked by the CCI under Section 4 of the Competition Act 2002.
