Five members of a gang involved in buying components to assemble fake iPhones have been arrested in Shanghai, by the Chinese police. Reportedly, the five arrested were a part of a much larger gang, who operated from rented apartments in Shanghai. The modus operandi of the gang involved around first buying components to be used in the making of visibly difficult to distinguish, fake iPhones from Guangdong in southern China, and then assembling them in apartments rented in Shanghai. During the raid, the Chinese police found as many as 200 of such fake iPhones in the gang's possession. ![]() How do you know if its fake?
It was further understood that it is really tricky to tell one (fake) from the other (genuine), since the fake devices have almost the same level of functionality as the originals, except for the battery life, which was noticeably lesser in the fake one. Reportedly, it takes as much as 2,000 yuan, roughly $313 (Rs. 15, 300) to assemble a fake iPhone from scratch. In fact, it was reported that some of the components used in the fake iPhone were actually genuine. However, the fake iPhone is put out for sale on the internet with a price tag of 4,000 yuan, which is just a few hundred yuans lesser than Apple's original.
These arrests seem to be just the tip of the iceberg, since China has repeatedly been on the radar for flouting intellectual property norms. The last we heard in this respect, was the flourishing business of fake Apple stores in the country, which was brought to light, only recently.
