Android 2.3 Gingerbread’s source code has made it to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), which means Gingerbread mods and custom ROMs will not take much longer to release. What this also means is that Gingerbread will hit phones other than the Nexus S soon. Feed on the source code Developers will be able to take a peek at, and develop stable ROMs out of, the untouched 2.3 code. ROMs will take a while before they’re polished and bug-free though, so I would advise against welcoming the first ROM that comes out with open arms. This might be augmented by the fact that it’s nearly Christmas, so I wouldn’t put my money on a good ROM coming out for a while now at the very least. Still, the prospect of there being tons of customizations and mods for the OS is something that makes my mouth water. I certainly can’t wait to get cracking at the new OS, so hopefully some modders out there will grant my wish soon. Are you listening, developer Santa? You can check out the original post here, in which Jean-Baptiste Queru implores you to wait a few hours or even a few days before you start downloading. Heh. |
