Government Passes the Blackberry Buck to Operators

The Indian Government, as part of its ongoing battle with Canadian manufacturer Research in Motion (RIM), has asked telecom operators to stop providing services if they cannot intercept them in a manner deemed satisfactory by the law enforcement agencies. According to PTI, the Government feels this is in line with a clause in the agreement between the companies and the Government which states all communication must be able to be satisfactorily monitored. What will Vodafone, Airtel et al do? The Indian Government has been trying to gain access to Blackberry’s Messenger and Corporate e-mail services for ages now and threatened to ban Blackberry services in the country if the demands weren't met. While they managed to get access to Blackberry Messenger data, RIM have categorically stated they cannot provide the govt. access to corporate e-mails because it is technically impossible due to the lack of a master key. The January 31 deadline that the govt. set has long since passed, and with no end to this battle in sight, the Government is now hoping that the additional pressure from the telecom operators will force RIM into granting them access. Which means they believe it’s possible - probably because of the precedent set in the Blackberry Messenger case where RIM were saying interception wasn’t possible, but later did a U-turn. |
