iPhone 5 may feature a 19-pin micro dock

When it comes to Apple and rumours, more than half of them should be taken with a healthy dose of salt. Two rumours however seem to be consistent for quite a while now. One of which is that the iPhone 5 will have a redesigned casing with a larger display and the second is that it will feature a micro dock. A report by TechCrunch claims to have received concrete information about the latter rumour, indicating that it will indeed come with a smaller dock as opposed to the 30-pin connector found on current generation iOS devices.

The report states, “Although the form factor and actual size are still unknown, TechCrunch has independently verified that Apple is working on adding a 19-pin port, replacing the current 30-pin port, to the new iPhone. It is a move that will surely send shocks through the iPhone accessory ecosystem.” They go on to add, “Three independent manufacturers all agreed that the 19-pin dock port is in the works and many accessory manufacturers are facing an uneasy few months as they wait for official news of the standard to be announced.”

As per a recent report by MobileFun, the website shows off schematics of the next iPhone and they have also listed a range of specifications that are expected to feature here. The website also points out to a leaked image of a case, which shows as to what one can expect the dimensions of the handset to look like. The report starts off by stating, “It looks like the iPhone 5 is getting closer to release, as we’ve seen a few tantalising images leak of the hotly anticipated next-gen handset. Today, we’ve got a few more fresh images that may confirm that the iPhone will indeed be a fairly drastic redesign from the iPhone 4 and 4S. One manufacturer we spoke to said that he was sure that the leaked images were accurate – so sure that he was already preparing to construct iPhone 5 cases and he’d be willing to ship replacements for free if they turned out not to be perfect.”

The next iPhone is expected to feature a major design overhaul and it is said to be much bigger, measuring 58.47 mm wide, 123.83 mm high and 7.6 mm thin with a 4-inch display. As previous reports have indicated, the headphone jack will also be relocated, with it being moved from the top of the iPhone to the bottom. The website also reports that the size of the dock has been reduced drastically and is much smaller and it is similar to the size of a micro USB.

The report states, “There are some other big changes afoot if this leak is accurate – the speaker grilles are much bigger and more pronounced on the bottom of the phone. The rear chassis is also new, with a two-colour aluminium design that separates the main rear cover from the antennae. Inside, there are expected to be changes too – including high speed LTE connectivity and the iOS 6 operating system. The phone is expected to launch in October.”

If you’ve used any of Samsung’s flagships in the past, you’ll be right at home with the new S4. We quite liked the handset during our brief encounter with it a few weeks back and after using it for about a week, we have come to like it even more.
