Putting into practice a ban on the sale of all foreign-made smartphones and stabilize the "poor economy", the Argentinian government has banned iPhones and BlackBerry devices in the country. Together iPhone and BlackBerry make up for almost 60 percent of the smartphone market in Argentina. Confirming the news Manuals.WS reports that, "The Argentinian Government have took some measures to reduce the inflation level andВ strengthen the Pesos / US dollar currency parity. One of them was to block the sales of certainВ electronics temporary, among them iPhone and BlackBerry phones."
Making a difficult choice?
Sure enough, Argentina is a market for other major brands, like LG, Samsung, Motorola, Nokia. However, owing to the fact that these brands have their manufacturing plants in Argentina, itself, hence they have evaded the ban. Simply put, to be able to sell in Argentina again, both RIM and Apple will need to have their manufacturing plants set up in Argentina. Having said that, no one's really sure if both RIM and Apple will set up their plant in Argentina. Also, by the looks of it, it doesn't seem that the government would relent, at least not till the economy stands up on its feet, again. All said, we now await the reactions from the brands. |
