Jelly Bean starts rolling out for the Galaxy Nexus HSPA+

| by Karan Shah | Smartphones

Google has stated via its Google+ page that the roll-out of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean begins today, starting with Galaxy Nexus HSPA+ devices. The company has also mentioned that if you own a Galaxy Nexus HSPA+ device, you may receive a prompt over the next several days to alert you of an available update. The other devices in the pipeline are the Galaxy Nexus, the Nexus S, the Motorola Xoom and the Nexus 7. Google Now also features as a part of the Google update. The new feature tells you the weather before you start your day, how much traffic to expect before you leave for work, or your favorite team's score as they’re playing. There’s no digging required: cards appear at the moment you need them most.

Here is a quick look at some of the other highlighted features of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean:

Project Butter: Just as the name suggests, this feature aims to make the operating system on devices extremely smooth. The developers have increased the frame rate on Jelly Bean to 60 FPS along with Vsync and triple buffering implementation to provide a smoother, buttery user experience. With Jelly Bean developers also get a chance to use a new tool called systrace that showcases what the rendering engine is currently doing. At the Google I/O conference, Google showed off the difference in speed between Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean; the former clearly pales in comparison.

Text Input: The keyboard is a lot faster and more accurate in Jelly Bean. The biggest addition here is voice input. Jelly Bean does not require users to have a network connection to make it work as the entire speech synthesis is done on the device itself. The predictive keyboard has been touched up with a couple of new features as well, and 18 new input languages are going to be added soon.

Camera: Google have not left out the camera with the update. Jelly Bean brings a new user interface to the camera app, besides gesture input, so you can swipe sideways to access the gallery like on WP smartphones. You can also delete images by swiping them off the screen.

Notifications: With Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, the notifications bar has also received an upgrade and it allows for more complex actions and alerts, straight from the notification bar. For example, missed call alerts gives you the option to ring the caller from the notifications bar itself.

Android Beam: With Android Beam, one can now share videos via NFC, along with the ability to pair a Bluetooth device with NFC capabilities by merely tapping on it.

All the other devices are going to get an update soon, so stay tuned as Jelly Bean is on its way. We’re hoping that other companies follow suit to make this the quickest roll-out ever.

If you’ve used any of Samsung’s flagships in the past, you’ll be right at home with the new S4. We quite liked the handset during our brief encounter with it a few weeks back and after using it for about a week, we have come to like it even more.
