Lenovo K800 Medfield-powered smartphone to compete with Lava XOLO X900

| by Roydon Cerejo | Smartphones

China just got their first taste of Intel Medfield through Lenovo’s ‘LePhone’ K800 that’s available now in retail and online stores across China for 3,299 Renminbi or Rs.29,000. The LePhone K800 will be available on Lenovo’s official website, 360Buy.com, selected Suning & GOME stores and Lenovo retail stores. According to Chen Xudong, senior vice president of Lenovo Group, “As Lenovo’s first smartphone with Intel inside, the launch of LePhone K800 has milestone significance.” Lenovo will compete directly with Lava’s XOLO X900 smartphone that also packs in a Medfield based CPU. “LePhone K800 represents an innovative achievement for Lenovo in the PC+ era, as well, a significant progress for Lenovo in smartphone market segment. Lenovo and Intel will continue to intensify their cooperation, integrating respective advantages in technology and resources to introduce more and better products and to explore the new frontier of the mobile Internet together.” Chen added.

The K800 has slightly beefier specifications compared to the Lava XOLO X900. For starters, it will sport a larger and higher density screen at 4.5-inches with a resolution of 1280 x 720. This gives it a high pixel count of over 320ppi which puts it in Apple’s Retina Display category. The phone will also feature the same Atom Z2460 Medfield CPU running at 1.6GHz and a PowerVR SGX540 for the graphics. According to Intel, “With Intel Hyper Threading technology, LePhone K800 possesses advanced multitasking capability to simultaneously run and smoothly switch between several applications. The phone also brings support for HSPA+ 21Mbs network with the Intel XMM 6260 platform that provides users with a snappy Internet experience, including fast application responsiveness, while the low power feature of the Intel 32nm Atom chip helps to enable competitive low power to provide users with long hours of conversation and entertainment.” Like many of the new phones releasing in the market, the K800 will unfortunately come pre-loaded with Gingerbread but hopefully, we should see an ICS update soon.

Here are some of the highlights of the phone:

  • 4.5-inch capacity touchscreen display with a 1280 x 720 pixel resolution
  • 3G, EDGE/GPRS and Wi-Fi capabilities for net access
  • GPS with A-GPS support for Google Maps
  • Bluetooth with A2DP and USB 2.0 (Micro)
  • 8MP camera with LED flash and secondary camera up front
  • microSD card support for up to 32GB more memory

If you’ve used any of Samsung’s flagships in the past, you’ll be right at home with the new S4. We quite liked the handset during our brief encounter with it a few weeks back and after using it for about a week, we have come to like it even more.
