Lenovo preparing smartphone with 1080p display

| by Aaron Almeida | Smartphones

Over the past couple of days, a host of rumours about major brands launching handsets with a 1080p display have surfaced. The last we heard was that HTC would launch a global variant of the Droid DNA, which is currently codenamed HTC Deluxe. According to a report by Engadget, it is now the turn of Lenovo to venture into the Full HD display segment of smartphones as screenshots of the interface with a Lenovo user interface (UI) have now surfaced online.

According to the report, this handset runs on a customised Android user interface and the highlighted feature is the 1080p display it sports. As with a lot of smartphones available in China these days, the handset features dual-SIM capabilities. From the screenshot, it appears that it is connected to China Telecom's CDMA2000 network and China Mobile's 2G network simultaneously.

Engadget's source informs it that the display measures between 4.5 inches and 5.5 inches. As of now, this is all that is known about the handset, and there is not even a name to go by.

As mentioned earlier, HTC could also be preparing a global version of the Droid DNA, a handset that is designed for Verizon in the US. This handset features a large 5-inch 1080p display and since it is the global version of the Verizon Droid DNA, the specifications should be very similar. The Verizon model comes equipped with a 1.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor and features 2GB of RAM. As far as connectivity is concerned, this handset comes equipped with LTE and NFC capabilities. However, we have to wait and see if the global variant features the same specifications or if HTC launches it with slight modifications.

There is no official word yet on when this handset will be released, but one can expect it to be introduced at the Mobile World Congress event held in Barcelona next year.

In related news about 1080p displays, a Korean website, Asiae, reports that Samsung is preparing to introduce a 4.99-inch Full HD Super AMOLED displays with a resolution of 1080p at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2013 event early next year.

The handset will in all likelihood be mass produced in the first quarter of 2013. It will be used in Samsung’s upcoming flagship smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy S IV, expected to make its debut at the Mobile World Congress event scheduled to be held in Barcelona early next year.

Commenting on the display, an official at Samsung Display said, “It has more than 100 pixels per inch more than the Apple iPhone’s 326 ppi stretched beyond the limits of the human eye level.”

The Samsung Galaxy S IV is touted to be Samsung's next flagship smartphone after the Galaxy S III. The latest rumour about the handset comes via SamMobile, which sourced the information from DDaily that the Galaxy S IV will feature the new Samsung Exynos 5450 processor. The S IV is expected to feature a lot of improvements over the S III, the most notable being the increase in the size of the display. The anonymous Samsung source has stated that the display size will be 5 inches, and that it is not certain if the screen will feature flexible display technology.

It appears that this niche space is slowly but surely getting populated with high end displays.
