LG rumoured to be developing new quad core phone with 10MP camera

| by Karan Shah | Smartphones

The rumour mill has gone into overdrive once again with companies pushing an increasing number of top end products into their smartphone pipeline. The rumours this time around are about LG planning a new smartphone built with parts manufactured by subsidiaries LG Display, LG Chem and LG Innotek. As reported by The Chosunilbo, this is expected to be the first LG-powered smartphone that will come with a quad core processor and a camera with a resolution of 10 megapixels. It’s interesting to note here that we already have the Xperia S in the market, that comes with a 12MP camera. LG Chairman Koo Bon-moo had earlier complained that the company itself did not utilise the parts that its subsidiaries were manufacturing, in spite of them being popular with other competing smartphone companies. For example, LG Display and LG Chem have been supplying parts to rival Apple.

An update to the Optimus 4X HD?

An update to the Optimus 4X HD?

LG unveiled its first quad-core processor Android smartphone, the LG Optimus 4X HD, back in February just ahead of the start of the MWC. LG combined NVIDIA’s latest 1.5GHz Tegra 3 with a true HD IPS display, for the LG Optimus 4X HD. It was one of the first next-generation phones of its time.

Here are the specifications for the LG Optimus 4X HD:

  • 4.7-inch True HD IPS display with a 1280 x 720 pixel resolution
  • 1.5GHz quad-core processor (NVIDIA Tegra 3)
  • 16GB memory, 1GB LP DDR2 RAM
  • 8 megapixel BSI Sensor (Rear), 1.3 megapixel front camera
  • Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich
  • 2,150mAh battery.

The phone was also equipped with an IPS display, which LG claimed would have great viewing angles with high resolution, clarity and no colour or shape distortion. The Optimus 4X HD included 16GB of internal memory and ran Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. The device also boasted of an eight-megapixel BSI (Backside Illumination) sensor camera with LED flash. It was also slim, measuring just 8.9mm in thickness.

The NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor was popular as being the world's only 4-PLUS-1 quad core mobile processor designed for high multimedia performance. The fifth core was designed to be used only for handling less demanding tasks, such as active standby and music playback, so the 2,150 mAh battery would be enough to power your smartphone throughout the day. Since then, there have been other Tegra 3-powered smartphones unveiled and launched.

Little is known about the upcoming phone, so we’ll have to see if it has anything more than just an improved camera sensor to it. This new phone may be launched this September, so there’s just a few months to see what LG is planning to come up with.

If you’ve used any of Samsung’s flagships in the past, you’ll be right at home with the new S4. We quite liked the handset during our brief encounter with it a few weeks back and after using it for about a week, we have come to like it even more.
