Names of upcoming BlackBerry 10 devices revealed through developer alpha unit

| by Aaron Almeida | Smartphones

At the recently concluded BlackBerry World event, Research in Motion (RIM) handed out prototype smartphones running their upcoming BlackBerry 10 OS. The Canadian company is lagging behind the likes of iOS and Android when it comes to smartphones and with their upcoming BlackBerry 10 devices, the brand hopes to change the game around in their favour. The move by Research in Motion to hand out alpha units of the BlackBerry 10 devices may be fruitful to the brand, as it will allow developers to create apps that run on this new operating system and by the time their first handset launches, their App World will be abundant with apps, thus keeping in pace with their competitors.

Future BlackBerry 10 devices revealed

It appears that one developer has dug a little and has found a list of codenames for the upcoming BlackBerry 10 devices. A report by N4BB, who has been provided information by J. Duke of OSBB states that by typing in a code, the list of handsets can be viewed. The report states, “This information can be viewed by typing file:///radio/etc/sv.numbers in the browser on a Dev Alpha. There are a few familiar names in the list. For instance, ‘Colt’ is the codename for the Dev Alpha. ‘London’ is a second revision of the Colt. ‘Blackforest’ is said to be the mythical 10″ PlayBook. The Winchester2 is likely to be the 3G and 4G PlayBook, but don’t quote us on it. What we’re really intrigued by are the devices called ‘Naples’ and ‘Nashville’. Perhaps, they will be in the same family as the ‘Nevada’.”

Here is a quick look at the list of devices that can be seen:

  • # R044 – Nevada 0x8400270A,1
  • # R051 – Winchester2 LTE 0x0c001a06,1
  • # R052 – Winchester2 HSPA+ 0x0d001a06,1
  • # R053 – Winchester2 LTE HSPA+ 0x0e001a06,1
  • # R061 – Colt 0×04002307,1
  • # R072 – London 0×04002607,1
  • # R073 – Blackforest 0×04002706,1
  • # R084 – Nashville 0x8500270A,1
  • # R085 – Naples 0x8600270A,1

The first range of BlackBerry 10 handsets are expected to launch before the end of this year and by the looks of things, the brand is going to release quite a few devices running on this OS.

If you’ve used any of Samsung’s flagships in the past, you’ll be right at home with the new S4. We quite liked the handset during our brief encounter with it a few weeks back and after using it for about a week, we have come to like it even more.
