Nexus 4G, Google's Next Gen Device to Come with Ice Cream Sandwich

17 Jun, 2011, 1:42 pm IST | by Ashish Koshy | Smartphones

We had earlier heard of rumours that the next Nexus smartphone would probably be manufactured by LG. There's been no official confirmation by either LG or Google about this collaboration. It is quite likely that Google just might go with LG after HTC and Samsung since they're also big in the Android buisness today, however, we cannot rule out other strong contenders like Sony Ericsson or even Huawei who have been in the smartphone market for quite a while now. The latest we've heard about the next-gen Nexus device is that it has been dubbed as the Nexus 4G and will have some seriously high-end specifications.

It's Super Nexus to the rescue!

According to BGR the Nexus 4G would possibly be powered by an OMAP 4460 or an ultra low-power 28nm Krait-based Snapdragon processor. Like most new-age Android powered devices, it's also possible tha the Nexus 4G won't have any physical buttons making the interaction completely software based. Other specifications that made the list inlcude:

  • a "huge" touchscreen display with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels (720p)
  • 4G, Wi-Fi
  • Bluetooth
  • 5 megapxiel camera
  • 1 megapixel secondary camera
  • 1 GB RAM

The 5 megapixel camera might not look too impressive in this list, but the camera could, in all possibility, have a high-end image sensor that can churn out high-quality images and record and playback 1080p videos. Getting back to the "huge" (as BGR puts it) display  and considering the resolution it might be sporting, I wonder whether the Nexus 4G will go the Dell Streak way and feature a 5-inch screen or would it have a smaller more standardized screen - 4.3-inch or 4.5-inch with higher pixel density. If the latter holds true, then the Nexus 4G could make the Retina Display look quite... average. On the other hand, I kind of hope that the Nexus 4G's form-factor doesn't get caught between a smartphone and a tablet. Leaving all the speculation aside, the Nexus 4G will also have Android 4.0 aka Ice Cream Sandwich and is said to be the reference/flagship model for Android 4.0.

What do you think the Nexus 4G's screen size will be? Would you want it to be equivalent to a tablet or something similar to the Dell Streak? Let me know via our comments section below and watch this space for information on Google's Next-gen Nexus device.
