Nokia may be launching a Dark Knight Rises special edition handset in India tomorrow

| by Aaron Almeida | Smartphones

One of the year's most anticipated superhero movies yet to be released - The Dark Knight Rises, is just around the corner. This will be the third and last instalment of Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight franchise and it will be hitting cinemas in India on the 20th of July. Fans of the superhero are definitely excited about Batmans latest adventure and are already gearing up for the movie. It appears that Nokia, too is cashing in on this franchise and has sent out invites to media houses with an image featuring the Bat symbol between buildings from the Dark Knight Rises Poster coupled with the caption ‘… and The Dark Knight Rises.’

What will they show?

What will they show?

From the looks of it, Nokia is definitely planning something big around the movie and in all possibility, the company may just unveil a limited edition Dark Knight Nokia Lumia 900, alongside the regular version of the device. The Nokia Lumia 900 is not yet available in India, although it has been launched in other parts of the world and been available for quite a few months now. Another major possibility is that the brand could also finally take the wraps off the Nokia Lumia 610 which is a budget Windows Phone 7 device. This handset is already being shipped to other countries in Asia and India is yet to receive it so there is a good chance that this handset could also be unveiled at this mysterious event.

In December, Nokia had also released a limited edition Dark Knight Lumia 800 that had the Bat symbol etched on the rear of the all black handset. Apart from the symbol, there were a few Dark Knight wallpapers, trailers, ringtones, etc. preloaded onto the handset. The box of the Nokia Lumia 800 remained the same but Nokia had added a paper packaging above it to give it a sense of exclusivity. Nokia was targetting the special edition handset at the superhero's die-hard fans, as the brand reportedly released only 40 pieces of the movie-themed smartphone.

There is also that slim possibility that Nokia could also launch a Dark Knight edition of the Lumia 800 in India, but the chances of that are a bit unlikely as this handset was released in other parts of the world late last year. The only possible explanation is a Dark Knight edition of the Lumia 900 and the entrance of this handset into the Indian market.

Here is a quick glance at the highlighted features of the Lumia 900:

  • Windows Phone 7.5
  • 4.3-inch AMOLED ClearBlack Display with a resolution of 480 x 800
  • 1.4 GHz Scorpion processor
  • 16GB internal memory
  • 512 MB RAM
  • 3G, EDGE/GPRS, Wi-Fi, LTE
  • Bluetooth v4.0, NFC
  • 8 MP AF camera with Carl Zeiss optics, 720p video recording at 30fps
  • 1 MP front-facing camera
  • 1800 mAh battery
  • Weighs 160g

While this could be a great move for Nokia to bring this handset to India, one would definitely sit back and wonder why the delay, especially now seeing as Windows Phone 8 is just around the corner and the Lumia 900 is not eligible to receive this update. The only update which will be available for the current crop of Lumia handsets is Windows Phone version 7.8  that will feature just the Windows 8 Start Screen or the homepage layout.

 7.0

We’ve already established that the Lumia 720 is Nokia’s best effort as far as Windows Phone 8 handsets go. This could soon change once the Lumia 925 hits markets, but as it stands now, the Lumia 720 offers the best blend of features and performance, wrapped in a beautiful package that’s quite affordable.
