Nokia releases teaser video hinting at use of augmented reality

| by Aaron Almeida | Smartphones

With the Nokia World 2012 event just around the corner, it appears that there are cracks in the dam, and the leaks are spilling continuously. Earlier on it was reported that the Finnish smartphone manufacturer would be releasing a couple of handsets that ran on the Windows Phone 8 operating system. The latest bit of information comes from Nokia itself in a form of a teaser video.

The video shows a woman walking down a street and then slows down when she passes a store. Next to the store, information such as reviews and social networking arises. These signs point to the fact that Nokia may be teasing augmented reality, and this could be one of the major talking points at the event slated for September 5, 2012.

Nokia had already introduced City Lens earlier on for the Windows 7 based handsets and the brand could be introducing it for Windows 8 devices as well. For the uninitiated, here is a quick brief on Nokia City Lens:

Nokia City Lens is an augmented reality app, which marks out nearby places located in the general direction the phone is held in. Details of the places such as the user’s distance from them, their street addresses, e-mail addresses, and phone numbers are revealed on the phone’s camera display. You simply tap on your chosen destination on your screen to conveniently access walking directions, make a reservation, or learn more detailed information about the locale.

This is not the first teaser released by Nokia. A few days ago, the brand had released another one, which showed a girl riding a bicycle. The second teaser is not as cryptic as the first. By taking a calculated guess, we assume that the first teaser has something to do with Nokia’s PureView camera technology.

Apart from the two teaser videos, Nokia is expected to take the wraps off their flagship smartphone, the Lumia 920. This handset will be Nokia's new flagship Windows Phone, and will include some impressive hardware specifications to match, which include a pad that will help in wirelessly charging the handset. The handset will feature 32GB internal storage, 1GB RAM and a 1.5GHz dual-core processor. The display featured here will be a 4.5-inch HD display.

Commenting on the camera of the Lumia 920, a report by The Verge stated, “One rumored aspect of the Lumia 920 is a PureView camera. We can confirm that Nokia will indeed brand its Lumia 920 camera as PureView, but that the camera will be an 8-megapixel one — not the 41-megapixel one found on the company's 808 PureView handset. Nokia is focusing on marketing the Lumia 920 as PureView thanks to some advancements in image stabilization and camera software that it plans to ship on the device. The front of the device will also include a 1.3-megapixel camera”.

Do share your thoughts on this teaser video above in your comments.

If you’ve used any of Samsung’s flagships in the past, you’ll be right at home with the new S4. We quite liked the handset during our brief encounter with it a few weeks back and after using it for about a week, we have come to like it even more.
