Nokia to Adopt Windows Phone 7 and Bing

Well, none of us can say we didn’t see this coming. Following rumours of the Nokia N9 becoming vapourware comes the announcement that the Finnish mobile giant will be teaming up with Microsoft to manufacture phones running the latter’s Windows Phone 7 Operating System, according to Reuters. The OS has quite a bit of potential, but is clearly a work-in-progress, as shown by the HTC Mozart 7. It’s now up to these two giants to bring it to maturity. Connecting Corporations Apart from using Microsoft’s Operating System, Nokia will predictably also be using their Bing Search Engine service on their phones. This is not the first time the two companies have teamed up – they had previously tied up to release the Office suite on Nokia phones and also to work on Nokia’s DRM. This news has been making its way down the rumour grapevine since the beginning of this month, so it really shouldn’t come as a surprise. A few unanswered questions though – what happens to Intel and Symbian? Obviously S40 will continue to be the OS of choice for the lower end handsets, but S60 and Symbian^3 are in quite some peril right now. Also, Nokia have been in working with Intel to bring out their Linux-based MeeGo platform for smartphones, netbooks and tablets. But Microsoft and Intel’s relationship has been strained ever since CES 2011, when Microsoft announced Windows 8 would be making its way to Cortex ARM System-on-Chips made by Qualcomm, Texas Instruments and NVIDIA. I certainly don’t think their relationship is going to be strengthened with Intel’s MeeGo being put on the backburner for Windows Phone 7. Either way, I’m up for it if it leads to some good devices. That’s all I’m asking for. |
