Over 2 million iPhone 3GS handsets to be produced by Q4 of 2011

While most people are swooning over the best iPhone yet, the iPhone 4S; sales of the iPhone 3GS have been going strong, considering the fact that it has been around for around two and a half years now. This handset came out around the same time as one of the first Android devices, but it still manages to generate sales, despite the lifespan of smartphones being significantly reduced. When Apple announced the iPhone 4S, they still did not discontinue the iPhone 3GS and this is like due to the fact that they are trying to manufacture handsets for all price segments. A report by DigiTimes claims that this trend does not appear to be changing and OEM production of their entry level handset is set to reach over 2 million units by the fourth quarter of 2011.

At an alluring price?!?

The report also goes on to state that unnamed sources have also informed them that besides pegging the iPhone 3GS at the 2 million mark in the last quarter of this year, 1.4 to 1.6 million units of the handset are expected to be produced in the first quarter of 2012. These are some seriously high figures considering how long the handset has been around. The same sources said, “Apple has been pushing the sale of its 8GB iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 pre-loaded with iOS 5 globally.”

It appears that the old horse is still running strong and has no plans on losing the race in the Rs. 20,000 odd smartphone category, just yet. Apple still tends to favor the iPhone 3GS as they are still releasing software updates for the handset and as of now, the trend doesn’t seem to change. Probably when the next iPhone is launched the iPhone 3GS may possibly be phased out. But judging by the units of the handset being produced, the entry-level handset is surely still making an impact for the Cupertino tech power house.
