Report claims PureView Lumia to not be unveiled in the near future

| by Aaron Almeida | Smartphones

The fact that the Nokia 808 PureView stole the show at the Mobile World Congress event held in Barcelona comes as no surprise. Before this handset was unveiled, many had expected the HTC One X to steal the show as it was the first handset to feature a quad-core processor. However, it seems that a camera’s capability is much worthier than a faster processor and this was seen with the Nokia 808 PureView winning the prestigious ‘Best New Mobile Handset, Device or Tablet at Mobile World Congress 2012’ award at the event. However, a few people felt that the only thing lacking on this handset was a formidable operating system, especially since Nokia does manufacture smartphones running on the Windows Phone OS. The 808 PureView runs on the Symbian Belle OS and as compared to the likes of Android, Windows Phone and iOS, it is not competitive enough.

There have been rumours and speculations indicating that Nokia would be using their PureView technology on their Lumia handsets soon after the Symbian model was unveiled, but there had been no real date set. As per a report by BGR.in, sources have informed them that the wait could get longer.

As per the report, the author states, “According to multiple people within Nokia as well as an analyst I spoke to, Windows Phone as a platform is just not ready at the moment to support all the hardware as well as processing requirements for PureView-like technology. It would take at least a year, if not more, for both Microsoft and Nokia to be able to make a Lumia device running PureView camera tech.”

For those who are in the dark regarding the Nokia 808 PureView, here is a look at its specs:

  • 4.0-inch AMOLED ClearBlack display with a 360 x 640 pixel resolution
  • 1.3 GHz ARM 11 processor, 512 MB of RAM
  • Nokia Belle OS
  • 16GB internal storage
  • 3G, EDGE/GPRS, Wi-Fi
  • GPS with A-GPS support
  • Bluetooth 3.0 with A2DP, USB 2.0
  • 41 megapixel camera with Xenon flash, 1080p@30fps video recording
  • Stereo FM radio with RDS
  • Memory expandable up to 32 GB via microSD card
  • 3.5 mm handsfree socket
  • 1400 mAh Lithium - ion battery

We recently spent some time with the handset and came away quite impressed. We also had the opportunity to find out about a PureView Lumia handset and a Nokia executive had stated that it was in the pipeline. But no real time frame had been provided. With this bit of information from the report we get a clearer picture, but we hope that it does launch sooner than predicted.

If you’ve used any of Samsung’s flagships in the past, you’ll be right at home with the new S4. We quite liked the handset during our brief encounter with it a few weeks back and after using it for about a week, we have come to like it even more.
