RIM and Indian Government Coming to a Peaceful Agreement?

24 Nov, 2010, 7:56 pm IST | by Ashish Koshy | Smartphones

Earlier today, RIM unveiled the BlackBerry Bold 9780 and now hopefully and the privacy issues that it has been facing from the Indian government should also hopefully end. While Research in Motion is quite confident about India allowing BlackBerry phones, the Indian government feels that coming to a mutual agreement and closing the debate on the whole will take some time.

India had earlier threatened to shut the instant messaging services unless they get access to the data. The Minister of State for Home Ajay Maken informed the Rajya Sabha, "With respect to security solutions for the Blackberry Enterprises Services, mutual consultations are on between the RIM and the government and as such more time is required to achieve a closure."

I love my India

As of now, all Blackberry traffic is encrypted and packed to Canada, which makes it difficult for the Indian government to tap in. The government's only issue is that this kind of privacy being offered can be misused by terrorists.

The telecom service providers have upgraded their network and the solution offered is being tested by the law enforcement agencies for which the time limit has been extended till December 31. We want the BBM services to stay without a doubt, but at the same time, you just cannot compromise on the security aspect. Hopefully we should see an agreement that is beneficial to both sides and doesn’t keep the consumers at bay.
