Rumour: Defective Wintek touch panels may limit initial iPhone 5 shipments

| by Aaron Almeida | Smartphones

Wintek is said to be producing 20 to 25 percent of the touch panels that are to be featured on the iPhone 5. However, according to a report by Digitimes, sources have indicated that a defect in the form of a delayed bubble has occurred in some of the upcoming iPhone 5 touch panels.  This defect in the panel may cause Apple not to meet the initial shipment targets for the upcoming launch of the iPhone.

In response to these allegations, Wintek has indicated that all of their products are still well on schedule. The report goes on to say that this delayed bubble defect is difficult to avoid while producing panels. The task becomes further unavoidable when it is not noticed during the course of laminating the panels. The report states that Wintek is expected to fix this issue quickly as the procedure of manufacturing the touch panels of the iPhone 5 is similar to that of the iPhone 4. Digitimes sources go on to mention that besides Wintek, Taiwanese TPK Holding produces 60 to 65 percent of these panels, while Chimei Innolux accounts for the remainder. The report ends by saying that their sources have revealed that Apple intends to ship 25 to 26 million iPhone 5’s by the end of this year.

As with all iPhone 5 news right now, these are mainly rumours and speculations that should be taken with a pinch of salt. We have to just wait and see what happens with the next iPhone when Apple officially raises the curtain on their flagship product.
