Rumoured specifications of the upcoming Galaxy Nexus emerge

| by Aaron Almeida | Smartphones

After the fan-made renders of the 2012 edition of the flagship smartphone from Google, it appears now the first batch of rumours for the specifications of the next Google Nexus smartphone has also started doing the rounds. And from a leaked image, we can see some changes that may feature in the next iteration of the Google branded smartphone.

Last year, Google co-manufactured the Galaxy Nexus with Samsung and this year’s model apparently will be done in the same fashion. Those hoping to find some major changes in the 2012 edition may be a bit disappointed as these supposed specifications of this model show that the next Nexus will feature only minor changes, specification-wise.

Specifications of the next Nexus

According to a report by SamMobile, “It looks like Samsung will make the next generation of the Google’s ‘Nexus’ line code name: GT-I9260. Samsung made before this phone the Google Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus. The next generation of the Nexus looks to be a small upgrade. When we see the specification we can say… Yes the screen, processor and camera is better, but for the HIGH-END market the processor isn’t that great. Google will use a 1.5 dual-core processor.”

Last year, Google had launched the Galaxy Nexus which was powered by a 1.2GHz dual core processor and this year’s major OS update from Google, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, works perfectly smoothly on it. With quad core processors being the talk of the town on high end Android devices and Samsung’s flagship, the Galaxy S III being powered by it, it appears that Google has decided there was no need to add four cores on the next device and hence, it opted for a two core solution for the upcoming Nexus.

There are other notable changes found here though and the highlighted one is that the device will have improved camera optics in comparison to its predecessor. As per the image received by SamMobile, the handset will sport an 8 megapixel primary camera as opposed to the 5 megapixel shooter found on the Galaxy Nexus. The front facing camera has also received an upgrade, with it now using a 1.9MP shooter as opposed to the 1.3MP camera used on the 2011 Nexus.

The website goes on to state, “For us the only sad thing is the 1.5 dual-core processor. But the device price will be cheaper, and there would be more market for Google in that. Samsung is the big boss in the HIGH-END Android market with the Galaxy S II, Galaxy S III and Galaxy Note, but Google could be one of the biggest players in the MID-RANGE – HIGH-END market with this device if the price is cheap of course.”

The handset will presumably run on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and will also use a 4.65-inch display. The other major change found here is that the handset will have the option for memory expansion as it appears to be coming with a card slot.
