Runaway hit: Apple's gold iPhone 5s is the surprise success of launch weekend
| by Anujeet Majumdar |
Apple has been grabbing all the headlines for the last few days with the unprecedented launch of two iPhone models at the same time, the 'budget' iPhone 5c and the high-end iPhone 5s. While there were many who questioned the success quotient of the new iPhones, the official market roll out of the models on Friday dispelled all thoughts of the new iPhones being anything but a success. The results of the first day, however, brought with it quite a few surprises. Contrary to what was expected, most users braved massive lines outside the official Apple retail stores to pick up the more expensive iPhone 5s. And most surprisingly, the champagne or gold coloured variant of the phone was all the rage.
According to CNET, the initial supply of the phone ran out within minutes of the official online sale opening its doors. In the US, where the online sale began a few minutes after midnight, the shipping date for the variant moved to an available date of seven to 10 days within 10 minutes, and less than 30 minutes later to October. This extended to the 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB version of the gold iPhone.
Gold is the most popular of the new lot
The high demand for the iPhone variant in the world’s largest smartphone market is surprising, given that earlier reports showed many Chinese users being put off by the pricing of the iPhone 5c. This clearly did not extend to the more expensive variant, as hundreds were seen waiting in line outside the company’s retail stores on the launch date, according to China News. And there were also reports of people being able to resale the purchased iPhones for a significant profit over the official price-tag.
And a Wall Street Journal report seems to corroborate that. While talking about this, Lian Jiyu, a 25-year-old at the Apple store in Beijing, said he wanted the 5S over the 5C because the 5S is the first phone to be offered in gold. While talking about this, the aspiring user said, “I don't care what's inside the device. Chinese people like gold.”
The Asian markets are seeing a huge demand for the gold iPhone 5s
While all reports indicate that the gold iPhone is out of stock till October, opinion is split over whether this was a glitch on Apple’s part or a deliberate move by the iPhone maker to hike up the demand by lowering the supply. While talking about this, Edwards says that “The gold iPhone is NOT made of real gold, it's made of aluminum and gold paint. The price of aluminum has actually declined during the year in which Apple began planning for its gold iPhone supply - so the idea that there might be a shortage of gold-dyed aluminum is just silly.”
Whatever be the case, it looks like Apple has managed to get its money’s worth with the variant. The device is fetching as much as $1,500 in auctions on eBay for the 32 GB version. Users who managed to get hold of the unlocked 64 GB gold iPhone 5s models in Apple stores were able to resell them for bids ranging from $2,300 to $3,000, according to FirstPost. A quick look at the eBay India page showed that the gold coloured variant was selling for Rs 79,990 for the 16GB version.
