Samsung scraps Bada platform for project Tizen

Samsung tried their hand at an OS, back in the day, when Android was still struggling to manage a foot hold in the OS realm and iOS was king. Sadly, Samsung’s pet project didn’t really take off, despite it being a very solid OS. Blame in on the lack of apps or good third party support, we only saw Bada in a few of Samsung’s Wave series handsets, which sold well, but not as well compared to Android offerings. In an interview at CES with Samsung’s Tae-Jin Kang, he revealed that the company has decided to scrap the project and instead concentrate on ‘Tizen’ open-source project, which is backed by Intel.

We still don’t know anything about this new project, except that it will be based on the lines of MeeGo, Intel and Nokia’s collaborative effort. Now that Nokia has ditched the project in favour of Windows Phone 7, Intel seems to have found a new partner with whom they can continue their work. This is a good thing, since, if they have to stand a chance against the seasoned players, they need to pool in all their resources and who knows, it could be the one that takes down Android and iOS one day. Hopefully we get to see some prototypes later on this year with possibly Intel’s Medfield chip powering the phone.
