Samsung trashes plans for a 32GB Galaxy Nexus

| by Aaron Almeida | Smartphones

It’s just past the mid-way mark of February and India is yet to officially get the latest Google flagship handset, the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. With the handset not yet being available in the market, many are beginning to consider this handset as old hardware and most eyes are set on what MWC has to offer in the form of the much talked about quad-core smartphones. Apart from this, the online community is also abuzz about the upcoming flagship from Samsung, which is the Galaxy S III that will be announced post MWC. With all the talk of the other handsets that are going to make their debut, the Galaxy Nexus, appears to be a thing of the past. However, news of the handset has surfaced once more, but it does not point to an Indian launch date, rather the internal memory of the handset will be capped at 16GB and not 32GB.

Something BIG is unveiled!

Only 16GB to be featured here

When the handset was announced in October and at the time, it was expected to be launched in two capacities, which are 16GB and 32GB. However, as per a blog post on XDA, a forum member states, “We've just been notified this morning that Samsung have dropped the Galaxy Nexus 32GB from production. At this time it looks like they will not be releasing it. Not good news at all.” This forum member is a spokesperson from retailer, Expansys and the product on their site reads discontinued with the page offering the 16GB option, instead.

Here is a look at the specifications of the Galaxy Nexus:

  • Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich
  • 1.2GHz Dual Core Processor
  • 1GB RAM
  • Dimensions are 135.5 x 67.94 x 8.94mm
  • Weighs 135g
  • 4.65-inch 1280 x 720 HD Super AMOLED display
  • 5 Megapixel AF with LED Flash with zero shutter lag and fast shot2shot
  • 1.3 Megapixel front facing camera for video calling
  • 1080p Full HD video recording at 30fps
  • 1080p video playback at 30fps
  • Bluetooth 3.0,USB 2.0, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, NFC
  • 16GB internal storage
  • HSPA 21Mbps/HSUPA 5.76Mbps 850/900/1900/1700/2100
  • EDGE/GPRS 850/900/1800/1900
  • LTE version is region specific
  • 3.5mm audio jack
  • 1,750mAh battery

This becomes rather frustrating for those opting to purchase the upcoming smartphone, as it does not have any form of expandable memory, such as a memory card slot that is quite commonly found on a range of Android handsets. With the lack of expandable storage one would only have to rely on the 16GB onboard memory, which may be too little for consumers. We’ve already established that the Lumia 720 is Nokia’s best effort as far as Windows Phone 8 handsets go. This could soon change once the Lumia 925 hits markets, but as it stands now, the Lumia 720 offers the best blend of features and performance, wrapped in a beautiful package that’s quite affordable.
