Security firm Sophos has discovered and Mashable has confirmed that Siri can make phone calls and perform certain other services while the iPhone 4S is still locked. If your iPhone 4S has been set up with a security passcode, to normally unlock and use your phone, you hit either the home button or the power button on top, enter your passcode and your phone is unlocked. Now, however, if you have a 4S that requires a passcode, when your phone is locked, tap the home button once and then hold it down to activate Siri. You can also just hold the home button down and Siri will ask you, "What can I help you with?". At this point you can command Siri to call a certain contact, which basically accesses your phone's database without you even unlocking it.
Activate Siri even when the 4S is locked
Siri will also search for local businesses, as well as search and play music on your phone. She won't however, search the web, giving you an error message saying "I can't search the web when your phone is locked. You'll need to unlock it first." Siri making calls while your phone is still locked is of course a pretty major security concern. What this means is if someone finds your phone, they have access to your contacts, as well as get specifically, the names of your friends, family and business associates. Of course, we're still waiting for the 4S on our shores and this security issue shouldn't dampen the anticipation of its arrival too much. Apple haven't issued a statement on it yet. |
