Smartphone, Tablet Popularity Soars; Single Function Devices Left Behind

29 Jul, 2011, 7:50 pm IST | by Karan Shah | Smartphones

Multi-function devices like mobile phones and tablets have had a near-exponential rise in the last decade leading to a massive decline in the sales of digital still cameras, PMP players, MP3 players and portable navigation devices.

According to IHS iSuppli, media tablet shipments are predicted to rise to 262.1 million units in 2015 from 17.4 million in 2010. Smartphone shipments will also rise to 1 billion units and beyond in the same year; up from 294.3 million in 2010. Smartphones and tablets on the rise

This trend seems like an obvious one. Most people prefer buying an all-in-one device, rather than separate devices offering singular functions. This allows portability and increased functionality whilst also saving on money. Smartphones have developed immensely in the past few years with features that have rivalled several single function devices like cameras, PMPs and navigation devices.

Tablets like the iPad2 and smartphones like the Samsung Galaxy S II currently provide unparalleled user satisfaction on all fronts if comparisons with all single function devices are made. Earlier, integration had taken a toll on the quality of multipurpose devices being manufactured, but in recent times with 8 MP cameras, GPS being a common feature in devices, that scenario has definitely changed. The future looks bleak for these single function devices.
