Sony Xperia tipo and tipo dual launched in India

| by tech2 News Staff | Smartphones

Sony has officially launched the Xperia tipo and Xperia tipo dual at a company event in Delhi. The smartphone runs on Android v4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) and is powered by an 800MHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor coupled with an Adreno 200 GPU. The phone features xLOUD & TrackID for music. The display of the phone is made of mineral glass and is scratch resistant. The Xperia tipo will be available in red, white, blue and black colours, while the tipo dual is available only in black.

The tipo is directed at the youth segment in the country and hence, is media and social networking friendly. The Xperia tipo dual is the first Dual-SIM Xperia device. The Sony Xperia tipo is priced at Rs. 9,999, while its dual-SIM (GSM+GSM) cousin Xperia tipo dual comes with a Rs.10,499 price tag.

The Xperia tipo comes preloaded with Bollywood Hungama, Dainik Jagran and Cricbuzz.

Here’s a quick look at the specifications of the Xperia tipo:

  • 3.2-inch TFT capacitive touchscreen with a resolution of 320 x 480 pixels
  • 3G, EDGE/GPRS, HSDPA, HSUPA, Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi hotspot
  • GPS with A-GPS
  • Bluetooth version 2.1 with A2DP
  • 3.15 megapixel camera
  • 2.9GB internal storage expandable up to 32GB via microSD

Sony had officially announced the Xperia tipo and its dual-SIM cousin Xperia tipo dual in June this year. The only difference between the Xperia tipo dual and the tipo is that the former is a dual-SIM smartphone. The tipo dual allows you to switch between two SIM cards using a dedicated hardware key. You can set the SIM card to use at specific times of the day and also customise each SIM card separately with different ringtones and notifications.

The Xperia tipo and tipo dual both have a 1500mAh battery that promises stand-by time of up to 470 hours and talk time of approximately five hours.

“The Xperia tipo is for consumers looking for entertainment experiences and functionality traditionally associated with high-end Android smartphones”, said Calum MacDougall, Director Xperia Marketing at Sony Mobile Communications. “It is for consumers who want to realise the benefits of a smartphone for the first time as they migrate from a feature phone,” he added.

The Xperia tipo and tipo dual originally had the model numbers ST21i and ST21i2 respectively. Both phones have a design similar to other dual-SIM variants we have seen in the past. The design of the Xperia tipo isn’t very inspiring or particularly attractive. For one, it’s a chunky little phone at 13mm thickness, and the double chin at the bottom isn’t winning it any beauty awards either. It weighs only 99.4gm, though.

 7.0

We’ve already established that the Lumia 720 is Nokia’s best effort as far as Windows Phone 8 handsets go. This could soon change once the Lumia 925 hits markets, but as it stands now, the Lumia 720 offers the best blend of features and performance, wrapped in a beautiful package that’s quite affordable.
