Specs of Sony ST27 Lotus surface; possible successor to the Xperia Active

| by Aaron Almeida | Smartphones

Off late, it appears that the news from the Sony camp regarding their smartphones have been surfacing a dime a dozen and looks like the momentum is only picking up with each passing day. Last week, images of a smartphone, codenamed LT29i Hayabusa had surfaced in blurry cam shots and some of the highlighted features of this model, included a 1.5GHz Qualcomm S4 processor, Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich and it was also believed to be packing a 13MP camera. The latest bit of leaks regarding Sony smartphones comes via Unwired View, wherein they have received information regarding the Sony Xperia ST27i/ST27a Lotus. This upcoming smartphone is believed to be the successor to the Xperia Active, the rugged smartphone that was launched by Sony, last year.

Sony to release a successor to Xperia Active?

In the report, the author notes, “The Lotus may be the successor to the Sony Ericsson Xperia Active, a ruggedized smartphone that bears the model number ST17i/ST17a. As usual with Sony (or Sony Ericsson) smartphones, the final letter in the model number indicates that there will be two versions of the device, with two different radios. So the ST27i (‘i’ for International, presumably) will get HSPA support in the 900 and 2100 bands, and the ST27a (‘a’ for Americas, we assume) will come with the 850/1900 bands for 3G (or 4G, or whatever else you want to call it). Those are just the bands that AT&T uses for its non-LTE 4G (HSPA) network, so who knows, maybe this phone will be released by that particular carrier at some point.”

Here is a quick look at the specifications of the Sony Xperia ST17:

  • Android 2.3 Gingerbread
  • Touchscreen display with a resolution of 480×854
  • T-Ericsson NovaThor U8500 1 GHz dual-core processor
  • Mali-400MP GPU

As of now, the specifications are quite vague and the information appears to be few and far between. But one can certainly expect more information about the Sony ST17 Lotus to surface in the days to come. Though it has been reported that Sony may launch their handset running Gingerbread, instead of Google’s latest OS, Android Ice Cream Sandwich, the report has obtained information from Blog of Mobile who claim that the smartphone could be sold running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich when it hits the shelves.
