Supersized icons heading to Samsung Galaxy S II in next update

We’ve just got word that Samsung will be releasing a small update for their flagship droid, the Galaxy S II, that would increase the icon size by 30 percent. By doing so, the homescreen will show just three icons in the bottom dock and the application menu grid will be reduced to a 3x3 grid. This seems like an awful waste of that beautiful Super AMOLED Plus screen real estate. The other change that this update will bring is a new System Update widget, which will inform you of the current version of the software and if any updates are available.

While one may think Samsung hasn't put in any thought into this, there is a good reason for this move. One of the issues in the ongoing legal battle between Apple and Samsung is the similarity in the interface in TouchWiz and iOS. By changing the standard 4x4 icon grid to 3x3, this automatically becomes a non-issue. Other than this, we can’t really think of a good enough reason for Samsung to make this move, unless of course they were having a lot of complaints from senior citizens. We hope this update adds an option to switch back to the original layout, you know, for those who don’t have trouble seeing. There’s no information on when this update will roll out, but honestly we don’t really care now that Android 4.0 is just around the corner.
