Symbian is still Numero Uno!

31 Dec, 2011, 12:51 pm IST | by Karan Shah | Smartphones

Nokia seems to be slowly nudging Symbian out to incorporate the fresh new Windows Phone 7 operating system, but guess what, according to a report by StatCounter, which keeps a count of the mobile Web traffic, Symbian is still the number one smartphone operating system in the world. Take that, Android and iOS!

Who's topping the charts?

Who's topping the charts?

Here’s a few more statistics. As reported by Gigaom, Symbian had a 33.55 percent share in web browsing as compare to 22.61 percent on iOS and 21.76 percent on Android. RIM took a measly 7.82 percent of the share. To be fair to the other manufacturers, this doesn’t exactly tell the whole story but the truth is that Symbian has a large domination factor in Asia, Africa and Latin America. US and Europe seem to have left it behind and shifted to the other more popular operating systems.

Now, if there are actually so many Symbian devices that are still activated, it would be brilliant if Nokia could find a way to make them somewhat future proof, or in simpler words, more useful? How about porting a version (barebones, if possible) of that OS onto the current Symbian devices, or finding a smart way for Symbian owners to shift to WP7? Well, that would just sweep the tide in Nokia’s favour.
