Tablets market to dominate desktops, notebooks, says Apple’s Tim Cook

26 Jan, 2012, 11:28 am IST | by Rossi Fernandes | Tablets

In a story covered by X-Bit Labs, Apple CEO, Tim Cook was speaking at a conference call with analysts and he was confident about the future of tablets. He said that the market for tablets would bypass that of desktop PCs and notebooks. In the last few days, we’ve seen companies report their earnings over the last quarter and it’s clear that things aren’t looking too great for many companies. It’s the PC component manufacturers who seem to be getting hit quite hard as well. Apple, on the other hand, reported great profits and they’re very confident about the year to come. Apple is sure about their own iPad tablets and there’s almost definitely a new iPad coming in the months to come. But, it appears tablets, in general are going to pick up pace.

Comfortable for videos

The dominating tablet today

There are a few reasons for tablets getting successful. Of course, they won’t completely replace desktops in a hurry. Tablets are great for media consumption and they can be used to listen to music and play videos from the web. They’re not just yet ready for productivity and development tools, yet. But, with new entrants, such as Microsoft’s upcoming Windows 8 operating system, there’s likely to be more sophisticated software being built for it. X-Bit Labs says there were more tablets being sold in the U.S than the total number of desktops, which is saying a lot for tablets. Apple emphasised on this point as well.

Plenty of colors for innovative case

Tablets - the biggest threat to PCs today?

Apple also said that tablets were selling so well that even their Macintosh system sales were being affected by them. Fortunately for Apple, iPads happen to be the most selling tablets around the world today. On the other hand, major PC manufacturers and PC component manufacturers are feeling the pinch. Some of them are likely to start focusing on Intel powered tablets and this might help relieve the situation a little bit. Considering everything, it’s still early to say whether or no PCs will totally be overcome by the tablet phenomenon.
