ZTE Mimosa X to be the first Nvidia Tegra phone with Icera modem inside

| by Roydon Cerejo | Smartphones

Nvidia completed its acquisition of Icera, back in June 2011 and according to their roadmap, the first Tegra chip with an integrated Icera modem module was scheduled to arrive in their ‘Grey’ series, which wasn’t expected, until much later this year. However, we’ve just got a press release from Nvidia stating that, along with ZTE, the company will be launching the first Tegra-powered phone with Icera in the Mimosa X, which should be demoed at MWC, next week.

This is not the Tegra ‘Grey’ series SoC, though, as the ‘Wayne’ series will be arriving first, somewhere in June that will finally shrink the fabrication size to 28nm, making it more battery-friendly. The Mimosa X will still be powered by a Tegra 2 processor, along with the Icera 450 modem. It’s only in the ‘Grey’ series that the modem will be embedded in the same SoC. The Icera 450 chip packs in a HSPA+ modem capable of speeds of up to 21Mbps, quad-band GSM, Radio Interface Layer (RIL) for Google's Android operating system and more. Since the baseband and RF chip are now integrated, less amount of PCB is required, which means phones can be smaller and slimmer.

Other Mimosa X will sport a 4.3-inch screen with a qHD resolution (960 x 540), a 5MP camera in the rear and 4GB of onboard storage. The phone will ship with Android 4.0, ICS, and feature DLNA and Dolby sound support. ZTE will launch this phone in the Q2 of 2012 and is positioning it as a mainstream smartphone, so the pricing should be affordable. We see more of it next week.
