Developer Creates a Tool to Bring Back RSS for Twitter

28 May, 2011, 12:29 pm IST | by Padmini Harchandrai | Social Networking

Earlier this month, developer Jesse Stay noticed that Facebook and Twitter had removed RSS support from their websites. After much outcry, Facebook reinstated an RSS link but Twitter didn't do anything. However, one developer, Shawn McCollum stepped up and used Twitter's API to create RSS feeds. The code is called "Twitter API 2 RSS," and is available here from GitHub.

The code was originally built for personal usage and he wanted to build his own better looking and more functional RSS feed for Twitter profiles. When he heard Twitter was removing RSS support, he realized the same code could be retooled for others. The only problem he's facing right now is Twitter's API limit of 150 calls per hour from a single IP address.

In the meanwhile, technical users can host their own copy of Twitter API 2 RSS and subscribe to feeds using Google Reader or any other RSS reader. The code isn't open to end users yet though and to read on how you can test it, visit McCollum's blog here.
