Iceland Uses Social Networking to Form Constitution

Iceland is crowd sourcing the formation of its Constitution. The country had retained the same Constitution since its independence from Denmark in 1944. The Constitution was copied outright from the Danish Constitution, with a few changes, here and there. Iceland's Constitution Council has now decided that they want to involve the citizens in the writing of the new Constitution, and in order to achieve this, leveraging social media would be the best bet.

The Council is using a Facebook page, a Twitter account, a YouTube channel, a website and a Flickr page to get Icelanders involved. This does then raise the point of social networking facilitating democracy. By getting citizens involved in the formation of their own Constitution, it can be argued that they'll take a greater interest and responsibility for the running of their own country, which is the primary purpose of democracy. And services like Facebook and Twitter, when they serve as the method of this responsibility, they become arguable keys of democracy.
