Twitter includes more in Expanded tweets, launches tailored trends
| by Padmini Harchandrai |
When you choose to expand a tweet on Twitter, you're usually able to preview any linked files that the tweet might contain, for instance, video and/or an article. Twitter will now add more content to an Expanded tweet, making the experience a little more interactive. So now, when you Expand a tweet containing links to partner websites, you will see content previews, view images, play videos and more. An important set of words in that last sentence is 'partner websites'. Twitter has already partnered with NASCAR and has launched a hashtag page for NASCAR events. It seems the microblog is quite enthusiastic to accumulate more. Twitter writes in a blog post, "You’ve probably expanded tweets before to play videos from YouTube or see photos from Instagram. Now, a diverse and growing group of new partners like the The Wall Street Journal, Breaking News, and TIME also deliver rich content inside Tweets containing a link to those websites."
Expanded tweets show more
So now, when you expand a tweet from a partner publication site, you will see a preview of the headline, an introduction to the story and the Twitter accounts of the publication and the author. You will also be able to see all of this content when you expand a tweet from a friend, which contains the link of a partner website, like The New York Times. Through the tweet expansion, you will be able to continue reading the article, follow the associated accounts, and reply to or retweet the tweet. Some partners, like WWE will provide you with exclusive photos in an Expanded tweet, while others, like Lifetime and Dailymotion will provide you with videos you can play in an Expanded tweet. These Expanded tweets are rolling out for everyone using Twitter on the web and mobile.twitter.com and will soon come to the iPhone and Android Twitter applications.
Twitter has also been working on a set of algorithms to provide you with trending topics that are useful for you. They wrote in another blog post, "Trends help you discover the emerging topics people are talking about on Twitter. You can see these topics as a worldwide list, or select one of more than 150 locations." The algorithms will base your trends serving on your location as well as the people you follow. Trends will be tailored for you by default on Twitter for web, mobile.twitter.com and the Twitter iPhone and Android applications. If you don't want to receive tailored trends and just want worldwide trends, you have to change your location settings to twitter.com. However, if you ever want to see trends in a particular country, including your own, then you can change your locations settings back to whichever country you choose. The tailored trends will start rolling out gradually, so be on the lookout.
