Firefox 6 available for download today, a day early

Mozilla might be taking the same path as Google did with their Chrome web browser. Firstly, the latest version of Firefox is to be officially released tomorrow. But, just like with Firefox 5 and some previous releases, the installers are already on the FTP server. This means that you can go ahead and download them now, without waiting for tomorrow's deadline. The binaries are the final builds and no changes are going to take place tomorrow. Older versions will be updated automatically when the official deadline ends. 

Firefox version numbers are likely to disappear

There are some other interesting things happening with Firefox. There’s a decision being made to remove version numbers altogether. Internally, Chrome builds are known by version numbers but there’s no clear presence of the updates told to the end-user. With Mozilla taking the same approach with the rapid release cycle, version numbers are likely to disappear sometime in the future. The only bit of confusion that might occur is with plugin support. Firefox is popularly know for its addons and a lot of users use the browser for this very reason. With version numbers disappearing and updates being automated, compatibility issues with plugins may be a reason for concern.
