Only recently did we report that popular PC manufacturer, Hewlett-Packard (HP) was seriously contemplating on winding up its PC business. While all speculations about the uncertainity of the future of HP PCs can be safely put to rest, a certain update has popped up pointing at yet another development. According to a report in the Guardian, HP may well be on its way to axing its webOS, which featured on its TouchPad tablet and smartphones. HP had acquired the webOS business in April, last year for $1.2 billion for Palm. The report further added that the closure of HP's webOS side of things would mean that as many as 500 employees are going to either be given other roles within the company or will be shown the door. webOS on its way out?
The report further suggests that while no concrete statement about the closure of HP's webOS has been provided, it has been noticed that several top-level staffers in the webOS division have been withdrawing their services, indicating that a closure may be near. HP's former chief executive, Leo Apotheker had initially suggested that HP wind up its PC business. With that announcement, news about HP's PC business going down began taking precedence. However, now with power changing hands (Meg Whitman, former eBay CEO, now with HP), new announcements have been made, leading to this development. |
